The Next Doctor To Be Revealed Live Sunday

On Sunday, August 3, BBC One will host a live show at 7.00pm BST in which the next Doctor will be revealed for the upcoming Christmas special and series of “Doctor Who”.  BBC America will simulcast the show at 2:00pm EDT (1:00pm CDT, check listings for other time zones).  Each network has put up a trailer for the special.  The BBC One trailer can’t be embedded, so here’s the direct link:

BBC America Trailer

Personally, I’m hoping they go with a relatively unknown actor who hasn’t appeared in “Doctor Who” or “Torchwood” (or even “The Sarah Jane Adventures”).  Yes, repeat actors/actresses can work for other characters, but I think that the next Doctor should be someone who hasn’t appeared.  I’m hoping for a shift away from goofy/silly Doctors – the next Doctor (whether male or female) should be sterner, more serious.  I’m not saying he/she should be angry, but I think a more serious personality for the new Doctor would do the series good, open up new storyline possibilities.

We’ll find out Sunday.

C2E2 Guest Update – David Newell and John Barrowman!

Holy crap. I thought that C2E2 was going to be a great show.

Now I know it’s going to be a FANTASTIC show! A couple of weeks ago, C2E2 announced that David Newell would be coming. Who’s David Newell?

Mr. “Speedy Delivery” himself, Mr. McFeely from “Mister Rogers Neighborhood”!

Now, I am a HUGE Mister Rogers fan. I have been since I watched the show religiously as a kid for years. I happened to be out of work at the time his last show was on the air in 2001 and I sat down and watched it. I heard him speak at my alma mater one year. And I was devastated when he died, and I wrote this tribute to him. I wish I had been able to meet him in person, but alas I never will.

However, meeting David Newell will be a special treat as well. I hope I don’t spout gibberish when I try to explain how much Mister Rogers meant to me as a child and still means to people today.

Today, though, C2E2 announced a huge blockbuster guest – John Barrowman! Wow, Captain Jack Harkness from “Torchwood” and “Doctor Who” is coming to Chicago! Holy freakin’ crap!

I became a “Doctor Who” fan thanks to my wife, and I fell in love with Captain Jack during the Ninth Doctor era, and then I absolutely loved him in “Torchwood”. I still feel “Torchwood: Children of Earth” showcases some of the best television writing I’ve ever experienced. And although “Torchwood: Miracle Day” was not quite as good, I do hope that there’s at least one more Captain Jack story coming to TV.

I hope I get to shake John’s hand and get his autograph. This is a huge boon for C2E2. Massive kudos to them!

So, ASM will be there in some fashion. Will we see you there?

Elisabeth Sladen – 1948 – 2011

Elisabeth Sladen, best known as Sarah Jane Smith from years of work on Doctor Who, has died, according to the BBC, as well as other sources.  She was born February 1, 1948, and played The Doctor’s arguably most well-known companion for over eighty episodes of the original series, several appearances in the 2005 revival, as well as starring in the children’s show “Sarah Jane Adventures” for four seasons (a fifth is reportedly slated to air on CBBC this year, according to Wikipedia).

The BBC is reporting that she had been battling cancer for a while, although the official cause of death has not been announced.

When the news first appeared on my Twitter feed, I had to think for a second.  “Elisabeth Sladen… that name sounds famil — oh, no.”   I didn’t grow up watching “Doctor Who” on PBS, nor did I watch the 2005 revival until several years after it started.  However, over the past few years I’ve learned more about The Doctor and Sarah Jane, and I understand the love millions of fans have for her.  To many, she is The Companion, the one by which all others will be compared.

ASM would like to pass along our deepest condolences to her family and to all who mourn her.
