C2E2 2014 – Overall Convention Thoughts

C2E2-Logo-Horizontal

The Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo hit the Windy City again this past weekend, and ASM once again had a great time!

This is the fifth annual C2E2 show, and we’re proud to have been at every one of them. When the show first started in 2010, it was a much smaller affair, one that we easily could see in a day. But the show showed promise of growth, and boy did it grow.  By 2012, we decided it was large enough to warrant a weekend trip, and our instincts were proven right.  Each year C2E2 has been bigger and better, so would 2014 continue that trend?

You bet your con badge it would.  Now in the fifth year, the show is the biggest it’s ever been, but unfortunately, we could only attend for a day. That was fine in 2010, but is it possible to see a show of this size in one day? Yes — if you make sacrifices and choose carefully what you want to see. If you want to see panels, that might negate seeing some of the show floor. If you want to get autographs, you might be stuck in line for hours and miss seeing a lot of the costumes.

We went in there with the mindset that we were going to see as much of the show as we could while still meeting the several celebrities we wanted to.  We would make the choice to skip part of the dealers booths so that we could visit the company displays and artist alley.

And so we did exactly that.  It was rushed, and, like we thought would happen, we didn’t visit at least half the exhibition floor, but we got a great taste of C2E2 2014, and we could see that what the show has become in five years is even more awesome. Read more

C2E2 2014 – The Diamond PREVIEWSworld Booth

The Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo hit the Windy City again this past weekend, and ASM once again had a great time!

Diamond PREVIEWSworld was at the show, displaying products that you can order through their magazine.  We took some pictures of things that caught our eyes.

C2E2 2014 – The Anovos Booth

C2E2-Logo-Horizontal

The Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo hit the Windy City again this past weekend, and ASM once again had a great time!  One of the booths we spent a lot of time at was that of Anovos.  When we had seen pictures appear that showed they had new Star Wars costumes, we knew we had to have a talk.  You see, here at ASM, we love costuming and we love Star Wars costumes.  We have costumes, we are members of the 501st Legion and Rebel Legion, and we have made many great friends through those organizations.

DSC_1029So, now Anovos is going to make high-end Star Wars costumes.  Could they pass the test of being screen accurate and high quality?  Well, if they’re anything like their Star Trek offerings, we figured they would, but we needed to find out.

Folks, I’ll put this as plainly as possible — these costumes are the real deal.  The Bespin Luke looked spot on, and the clone armor?  Oh my God.  I swear it looks better in some ways than the armor I have.

I had a chance to speak with Joe from Anovos and gleaned a little bit of information from him.

  • First off, pricing and release dates are not set in stone for any of the Star Wars costumes.  Your best bet is to go to Anovos.com and sign up for their newsletter.
  • eFX Collectibles still has the lightsaber replica license from Lucasfilm, but both companies are going to try to work together to release costumes and lightsabers at the same time
  • Based on the booth, though, it looks like some blaster props are now licensed to Anovos
  • The armor will come in two versions – a fully completed kit and a ready-to-assemble kit.  This means if you want to put in the effort to get the armor sized to your measurements, you can, but you can also just get the standard kits so you can suit-up immediately.
  • Future clone colors are coming.
  • They’re not quite sure how they’re going to handle clone boots (which, in my experience, are the hardest thing of clone armor to replicate from the fully-digital world).  They might do a rubber-soled slip-on covering which would give you the look of the boot yet give you the stability of a shoe.
  • They are working with the 501st Legion and Rebel Legion to get these costume details right.

I’m totally impressed.  Anovos, if you can hook us up with a tour of your facility, I’d gladly help model your armor.  That and your DS9/Voyager Star Trek costumes, too – I’d love to see how the O’Brien would look on me.  Hope to see that in person at a future convention.

Thanks for the time at C2E2!

C2E2 2014 – The Saturday Costumes

C2E2-Logo-Horizontal

The Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo hit the Windy City again this past weekend, and ASM once again had a great time!  We love costuming here at ASM, but unfortunately we didn’t get to see as many costumes as we would have liked, since we were only at the show on Saturday.  Still, we enjoyed what we saw, and we hope to spend more time at the show next year.  Here are some of our favorites from Saturday.

C2E2 2014 – The Valyrian Steel Booth

C2E2-Logo-Horizontal

The Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo hit the Windy City again this past weekend, and ASM once again had a great time!

DSC_1000We had no idea Valyrian Steel was going to exhibit at the show, which is odd seeing as we are huge “Game of Thrones” fans and pretty much follow everything they post on Facebook.  However, our lack of foreknowledge proved to give us quite the surprise when we walked past their booth on the way to get lunch and immediately were stopped in our tracks by all the pretties.

DSC_0998On hand were their new Unsullied helm and Loras’ helm as well as their impressively massive helm of The Hound.  They were letting folks lift and try out the Hound’s helmet, which I found to be extremely heavy, as a good replica of it would be.  The helmet for Loras looked quite lovely, which suits the character.

DSC_0982I also got a chance to look longingly at some of the swords on display, including both the novel and TV version of IceLongclaw, the sword of Jon Snow; Robb Stark’s sword; and scabbards to match. In addition, the statues of Tyrion and Jon Snow with Ghost were on hand.

It’s a miracle I didn’t just hand over my credit card to them right then and there.

Pictures may not do these works of art justice, but check out the gallery just the same.  Hopefully we’ll see them back at C2E2 2015. Read more

C2E2 2014 – The Kosart Atelier Booth

C2E2-Logo-Horizontal

One of the more interesting interactive booths we saw was for the Kosart Atelier School for Entertainment Arts .  This school teaches all aspects of effects art, including make-up, mask making and resin bust making.  Their display not only had some examples of their work, but artists were busy sculpting right in front of you.  They even were applying makeup and mask effects to people (although I’m not sure if they were con attendees or other artists.)  Had time allowed I could have stayed at their booth for hours.  Check out the pictures!

C2E2 2014 – The Diamond Select Toys Booth

C2E2-Logo-Horizontal

The Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo hit the Windy City again this past weekend, and ASM once again had a great time!  One of the places we made sure to see was Diamond Select Toys.  Although we missed Zach Oat while we were there, we got some great pictures of the display!

On hand were some awesome new Minimates, including the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Minimates, TMNT banks were also on display, as was a battle damaged Ghostbusters Stay Puft Marshmallow Man bank.
