Transformers Fans, Get Ready to Celebrate MAY MAYHEM

Tomorrow is the first of May, and do you know what that means?  (Besides everyone online saying “May the Fourth Be With You” in a few days.)

It means we are ready to kick of MAY MAYHEM for Transformers fans!  This month, you and I will be able to celebrate the ongoing Combiner Wars toyline with comics, online participation, new toys, and other fun ways.  The highlight of May Mayhem is the release of two new CW toys – Quickslinger (a/k/a Slingshot) and Brake-Neck (a/k/a Wild Rider), the two toys you need to recreate your Generation 1 experience with Superion and Motormaster.

Two new toys is just the beginning.  Here’s a rundown of what we can expect in May Mayhem:

Mid-May – The celebration kicks off with the latest round of fans’ choice voting for the TRANSFORMERS Hall of Fame. Who will be a part of the Class of 2015 and join the ranks of Optimus Prime, Megatron, and other legendary TRANSFORMERS? You decide!

May 13 – IDW Publishing releases TRANSFORMERS #41, the latest chapter of their epic COMBINER WARS storyline.

May 22 – AERIALBOT QUICKSLINGER and STUNTICON BRAKE-NECK will be available exclusively through participating online retailers, such as,,,, Entertainment Earth, BigBadToyStore, Diamond Comics and Hasbro Toy Shop. With these two new figures, fans are finally able to complete their G1-accurate SUPERION and MENASOR figures! In addition to these all-new toys, several vendors will be running special promotions on TRANSFORMERS GENERATIONS: COMBINER WARS figures, providing fans with an ideal way to complete their collections.

Late May – TRANSFORMERS fans will come together on the official TRANSFORMERS Facebook page ( for an exciting new product reveal.

May 27 – The COMBINER WARS battle comes to a head in IDW Publishing’s TRANSFORMERS WINDBLADE – COMBINER WARS #3.

That’s good stuff, isn’t it?  I just hope come mid-May I can completely go nuts in a campaign to get Vince DiCola in the TF Hall of Fame.

May is going to be big, Transformers fans.

Four with Phil – Episode 9: The Man Who Tolerated Powerglide

In this episode, Phil talks about the new Humble Bundle with up to 86 Transformers comics (updated total as of press time: about $16 to unlock them all). And he rants about Combiner Wars Powerglide.

The IDW “Transformers: Dawn of the Autobots” Live Panel Is Online

Did you miss this afternoon’s “Transformers: Dawn of the Autobots” Google+ hangout?  Fear not, IDW has made it available for viewing.  Check it out below or go directly to the video.

Of course, only after the panel was did I think of a good question to ask….

IDW Previews – April 23, 2014 – Transformers: RiD, 24 and Full Solicits

It’s kind of like last week — out of all the comics IDW is slated to release tomorrow, two caught my eye, and once again it’s 24 and Transformers.  You can see previews below and the full solicitations on page 2.

First, The Transformers: Robots in Disguise begins “Season 2″ with issue #28.  Written by John Barber with art by Andrew Griffith, this issue finds the Autobots returning to Earth six months after the events of “Dark Cybertron”.  The problem is that they weren’t exactly given a tearful goodbye when they left last time….  This preview happens to feature one of the best damn intros ever, and you can see it below.

Second, leading up to the return of 24 on May 5, IDW is releasing a new mini-series subtitled “Underground” showcasing what happened since we left Jack Bauer at the end of season 8.  I’m guessing that this story won’t be filled with him working at a Build-A-Bear factory….  Issue #1 is written by Ed Brisson with art by Michael Gaydos.

Comic Review: “Transformers: Windblade” #1

TF_Windblade_01-pr-1In the world of comics, something new is always heralded as a big thing.  It could be a new story, a new writer, a new art team, a new mini-series, a new #1 issue of a long running series — or even a combination of several of the above.  Publishers will do their best to say that New Stuff makes for a comic Worth Reading.  (Sometimes they all but scream it in your ear.)  The problem with this is that bringing New Stuff has been done so often that there’s a big potential for a letdown.

Looking at The Transformers: Windblade #1, we see we have near every single new thing I listed above, and we also have a darn-near brand new character as the comic’s focus (said character being the product of an unprecedented fan-poll).  Put those all together and you’ve got the makings for either a book that’s worth all the attention or the biggest over-hyped story of the year.

Well, guess what. The Transformers: Windblade #1 is just that awesome.

IDW Previews – April 16, 2014 – Transformers, 24 and More

There are a couple of books that IDW is releasing tomorrow that caught my eye.  First and foremost we have the highly-anticipated Transformers: Windblade #1.  The character of Windblade is fascinating from a behind-the-scenes standpoint alone.  It’s the first character ever created in Transformers with input from all fans.  Last year, Hasbro put up a poll asking what kind of character the fans would want, and lo-and-behold, we have Windblade, a female Transformer that exists in a universe where there aren’t many of her kind.  Not only that, she’s also the only robot around who can speak to Metroplex.  In the aftermath of Dark Cybertron, we find that Metroplex is pretty much the only inhabitable place to live… and it’s up to Windblade and her teammates to keep him that way.

TF_Legacy_MockCovTransformers Legacy: A Celebration of Transformers Package Art—CERTIFIED COOL

Jim Sorenson, Bill Forster (w)

Remember the thrill of tearing open the wrapping on Christmas morning, discovering a brand new TRANSFORMERS toy in a shiny new box? While the toys were amazing in their own right, what made the packages stand head-and-shoulders above the competing action figures on shelves was the stunning box art. Transformers: Legacy collects hundreds of beautifully airbrushed paintings from the iconic first decade of The Transformers. Essays and interviews from the original illustrators give unprecedented insight into the process behind the art. This book is chocked full of extras, including never before seen artwork from toys that never were, original design sketches, catalog artwork, and more.

Comic Quick Look: Transformers Beast Hunters #5

TF_Prime_BeastHunters-05-pr-1I’m not sure what it is about this series that makes it hard for me to really enjoy it.  Last issue ended the first story line about the Dinobots on Cybertron, and I called it a solid “Meh”.  I also hoped that the new story starting here in issue #5 would grab me more.

Well, so far, so bad.  I should be caring about these characters, right?  I mean, I love the Dinobots, I love the fact that they’re teammates who don’t necessarily bicker.  There’s an appearance by a new version of a beloved Marvel Transformers character — okay, beloved might be strong, but it ticks a nostalgia factor.

Still, I’m not sure why I’m not that interested.  The art is serviceable, but I just find myself reading the comic and thinking, “… eh.”  Maybe it’s because the two main books, More than Meets the Eye and Robots in Disguise are that much better.  Maybe it’s because Beast Hunters won’t have an affect on the main cartoon story (that we know of).

Or maybe it’s just boring.  Even with a planet-wide earthquake, some robots getting healed, some robots getting hurt, this story just doesn’t make me think “Wow, I can’t wait until the next issue!”.

I’ll still keep reading it, but maybe I’m just being masochistic here.
