#NYCC 2013 Friday Pictures – Square Enix, Skybound Entertainment, Masters of the Universe

nycc-logo-2013-hiAnthony Brucale, the genius behind TFU.INFO, was at New York Comic Con Friday, taking pictures for us.  Because of the amount of pictures, we’re going to post them in batches rather than have you wait for one long post to load up.

The Square Enix Booth

Square Enix displayed some upcoming statues in their booth.  Note: Some figures are still pending licensing approval (Robocop, Star Trek, Alien).

Skybound Entertainment

Skybound Entertainment is Robert Kirkman’s company.  You may have heard of his books: Invincible, Ghosted, Thief of Thieves, and a little title called The Walking Dead.

Mattel’s “Masters of the Universe” Display

Mattel had loads of their “Masters of the Universe” Classics on display at the show; we tried to get pictures of it all (apologies for some weird lighting issues causing havoc with the camera).  Strobo was released at the con.

A Few Thoughts on the New Mara Jade Bishoujo Statue from Kotobukiya

Kotobukiya has released images of their long-awaited Bishoujo Mara Jade figure today via their Facebook page.  The figure is also currently on display in their booth at New York Comic Con.  While I wish I could be there in person to view the figure, being just shy of nine months pregnant means I’m unfortunately not allowed on a plane to New York.  Thankfully, the photos Kotobukiya provided on their Facebook page give a more than adequate view of the figure’s details.  My review here is based solely on those images.  [Ed: A select few have been reproduced here for this article.]

I should preempt my comments by pointing out what a huge Mara Jade fangirl I am.  The character immediately grabbed my attention back when I first read “Heir to the Empire” in the 90’s.  My obsession led to collecting any Mara merchandise released – which hasn’t been much.  It also led to the slightly more expensive obsession of building an accurate Mara costume.  So yeah – total fangirl.  Needless to say, I have been eagerly waiting for a glimpse of Kotobukiya’s figure ever since the first rumors of it began swirling.  I was delighted to see the photos surface this morning.

Image from Kotobukiya’s Facebook Page

My overall impression is WOW.  This is what I was hoping for.

The details of the bodysuit are accurate to prior official photos and illustrations of the character.  I especially like that the seams/piping of the bodysuit match up with other resource pictures.  The diagonal piping on the inner thigh is spot-on.  One interesting variation to the bodysuit is the blue color.  The bodysuit is more commonly colored black.  While I don’t dislike this change, and view it as more of a stylistic choice, it is different and of note.

I really like that the figure comes with both her Emperor’s Hand purple lightsaber and Luke Skywalker’s blue lightsaber (Luke’s saber was given to her in the EU novels).  The hilt details are amazing, especially on the Emperor’s Hand hilt.  I love when a prop is reproduced so accurately in miniature.

The costume’s accessories are very well done as well.  It should be noted that there have been several variations on Mara’s accessories in official sources.  For example, her belt holster is sometimes seen on the hip, as with this figure, but it has also been shown to rest along the small of her back.  Another example is that Mara sometimes wears the tan cape depicted in this figure, and other times she sports a cream or white head cowl.  There have also been variations on her blaster and gloves.  There are many directions Kotobukiya could have gone with this figure’s costume.  The version they went with seems to mostly reflect the cover of the comic book “Mara Jade:  By the Emperor’s Hand #1″.  The cape clasp at the figure’s throat reflects this as well.

Image from Kotobukiya’s Facebook Page

The pose is one that works well for the character.  Instead of an action pose, Kotobukiya seemed to go for more of a natural pose.  I really like how they sculpted the cape and hair to flow.

On a personal note, I am happy with how the figure was designed in a manner that I feel is repectful to the character and her female fans.  Bishoujo means “pretty girl”, and I admit to fearing the figure may be overly girly or sexualized.  This has not proven to be the case.  The only thing this fangirl could nitpick in that regard is the stilletto heels on the boots, but that is fairly minor and doesn’t detract from my appreciation of the overall figure.

I’m very impressed, and thank Kotobukiya for giving us Mara Jade fans a rare, high-quality collectible.  I look forward to ore-ordering mine!

Dark Horse SDCC Game of Thrones Stark Shield Plaque

StarkShieldFrontWhen Dark Horse announced that they would make a small replica of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” Stark Shield for San Diego Comic-On 2013, we here at ASM knew we had to get one. Initially asking Matt Guzy of Awesome Toy Blog to be the procurer, we were then pleased to find out that HBO Shop was going to put a limited supply on their website the opening night of SDCC.  And by pleased we mean, “Holy crap they just tweeted that they put some up on their website I gotta get to my computer where’s my credit card RIGHT NOW HOLY CRAP!”

Now, we love “Game of Thrones” and A Song of Ice and Fire.  A previous SDCC Exclusive, the Iron Throne sits on our entertainment center.  A letter opener of Ice adorns one of our office walls.  We’ve got several of the Funko Pop Vinyls, and the Valyrian Steel version of Needle decorates our home.  So, yeah, we’re excited to have this new Stark Shield grace our wall next to Needle.

Measuring 7″ in diameter, this Stark Shield is a faithful reproduction of the shield as seen in HBO’s “Game of Thrones”, wielded by the soldiers of Winterfell.  It is light enough to hang on the wall, but sturdy enough so it won’t break in your hands.  It’s made with a dull finish, to better look weathered, and while you can’t use it as a prop yourself, it looks great as a wall decoration.

Keep making more of these, Dark Horse!

SDCC: Dark Horse Announces SDCC Exclusives Store!

Dark Horse sent over a press release regarding their 2013 San Diego Comic-Con Exclusives.  Because of the huge graphic, I’m going to post it after the jump.  After reading what they’ve got, I’m most jazzed about the Game of Thrones Stark Replica Shield, but that exclusive cover for Star Wars #7 is pretty darn cool, too.  Be sure to hit up booth #2615 to get your favorite exclusives from Dark Horse!

Dark Horse Deluxe Gets GRIMM

Hit NBC TV Show to See Full Product Line from Dark Horse

DH-GRIMM KEY SOLJUNE 14, MILWAUKIE, OR—Dark Horse Comics’ toys and collectibles imprint, Dark Horse Deluxe, is proud to offer new items based on characters and stories from the hit NBC show Grimm! The Grimm collectibles from Dark Horse are licensed through NBCUniversal Television Consumer Products.

Grimm is a cop drama inspired by the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tales, following Portland homicide detective Nick Burkhardt into a reality he never knew existed. Once he discovers this new world, and his role in it, he has to deal with much more than the usual criminals and investigations. With his partner Hank and ally Monroe (who is also a magical creature called a Blutbad), Nick delves into cases involving bees, bats, bears, and more!

“As Portland residents, we feel a special kinship with a series filmed in our hometown,” Dark Horse Product Development VP David Scroggy observed, “although we would have been drawn to Grimm if it were filmed in North Dakota. The production team has been most accommodating, inviting us to visit the sets, examine the props, and meet with the key design and VFX staffers to help inform our line. This kind of cooperation is rare, and it has ensured a great accuracy down to the smallest details.”

Dark Horse Deluxe is launching their Grimm line with an assortment of products. The centerpieces of this first wave are sculpted, wearable pin replicas of Nick’s key and one of the coins of Zakynthos.

Nick is bequeathed the key as his dying Aunt Marie introduces him to his destiny as a Grimm, warning him to guard it with his life. The key is revealed to have a map carved on the outside, which is etched into the replica pin’s surface. Two small loops on the key allow the wearer to easily convert it from a pin to a hanging pendant. The mysterious, ancient coin of Zakynthos has a long history of bringing a bad end to its possessors, although the Grimms seem strangely immune. While its purpose remains a mystery, various dark forces are seeking it and will kill to attain ownership of it. The Dark Horse coin pin replica is given an antique finish over zinc alloy, re-creating the patina of antiquity.
